Week Without Driving 2024

Did you know that an estimated 30% of Americans don't drive? The reasons for this are numerous; from disabilities, to age, financial burdens, or health issues, millions of Americans must rely on public sidewalks and public transportation to get to where they need to go. Sadly, for many of these non-drivers, they are largely unable to get their daily needs met because their community's built environment and transportation systems are lacking.

Quite literally, millions of Americans live their lives every day without access to necessities, all because they don't drive. In other words, they are living in communities built for cars but not for people.

This is not okay.

To raise awareness of this injustice, Week Without Driving was created (thanks, Anna Zivarts and Disability Rights Washington!) to encourage people to spend a week without driving, to truly understand the lived reality of our communities' non-drivers.

This year I am pledging my participation in Week Without Driving and I am so incredibly thankful to live in the City of Pittsburgh, which has truly embraced this initiative, thanks to co-hosts Bike Pittsburgh, Access Mob Pittsburgh, AARP Pittsburgh, and Pittsburghers for Public Transit.
